What is the difference between an AMR and an AGV?

The primary difference is that an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) uses autonomous navigation to dynamically move through its environment, while a traditional Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) generally follows a predefined route or guidance infrastructure.

AMRs and AGVs are both used to automate material movement, but their navigation approaches are different.

An AMR can use technologies such as sensors, mapping, cameras, and onboard navigation software to determine its route and respond to changing conditions. This allows an AMR to navigate around obstacles and adapt its movement without depending on a permanently fixed travel path.

Traditional AGVs are generally associated with predefined routes or guidance systems. Depending on the technology, this may involve magnetic guidance, markers, wires, reflectors, or other infrastructure.
