Push-back pallet racking is a high-density storage system in which pallets are stored on inclined rails or carts and pushed backward as additional pallets are loaded into the same storage lane.
Push-back racking allows multiple pallets to occupy the depth of a storage lane while maintaining access from the front.
When a forklift places a new pallet into the lane, the existing pallets move backward. When the front pallet is removed, the pallets behind it move forward toward the picking position.
Push-back racking can be useful when a warehouse needs:
- More pallet positions than conventional selective racking
- Better use of available floor space
- Multiple pallets of the same or similar products
- Efficient storage without driving a forklift into the rack
Unlike selective pallet racking, which generally provides direct access to each pallet position, push-back racking prioritizes storage density over individual pallet selectivity.
The appropriate configuration depends on SKU characteristics, inventory turnover, pallet dimensions, load requirements, and whether FIFO or LIFO inventory rotation is required.
Swisso Storage can help evaluate whether push-back, selective, mobile, or automated storage is appropriate for a particular warehouse layout and inventory profile.
